Objectives of the Practice:
- To instil a sense of social responsibility among students, faculty, and staff, promoting a culture of community service and civic engagement
- To provide students with experiential learning opportunities that integrate academic knowledge with real-world applications, enhancing their skills, knowledge, and employability
- To establish and strengthen partnerships with local organizations, NGOs, and government agencies in Nashik to create opportunities for community engagement and service
- To identify and address pressing social, economic, and environmental issues in Nashik, leveraging the college’s resources and expertise to make a positive impact
- To encourage collaboration among students, faculty, and staff from diverse disciplines to develop innovative solutions to community challenges
- To embed community engagement and service into the college’s culture, making it an integral part of the institution’s identity and mission
The Context:
HPT Arts & RYK Science College, established in 1924, is a premier educational institution in Nashik, Maharashtra, with a rich legacy of academic excellence and community service. The College has been a center of many social, political and cultural movements in pre-independent as well as post-independence times. As a leading college in the region, we recognize the importance of extending our academic pursuits beyond the classroom to make a positive impact on the community.
Nashik is one of the fast-developing cities in Maharashtra, having a mixed agricultural and industrial setup. It has a population of over 1.5 million, faces various socio-economic challenges, including poverty, inequality, and environmental degradation. The city’s rapid urbanization has led to an influx of migrants, straining local resources and infrastructure. Additionally, the surrounding rural areas struggle with limited access to education, healthcare, and economic opportunities.
Gokhale Education Society, which is the governing body of the College is known for its philanthropic approach and commitment towards upliftment of deprived. Our founder Principal T. A. Kulkarni envisioned an institution that would not only provide quality education but also contribute to the betterment of society. Over 100 years, we have undertaken various community outreach initiatives, including blood donations, cleanliness drives, literacy programs, health camps, and environmental conservation projects.
In response to the growing needs of the community and our institutional commitment to social responsibility, we have developed the best practice titled “Beyond the Classroom: Community Engagement and Service.” This initiative aims to systematize and scale up our community engagement efforts, ensuring that our students, faculty, and staff are actively involved in addressing the pressing issues of Nashik and its surrounding areas.
The Practice:
This Practice was carried out through following activities
- Organizing Blood Donation Camps since 2018, where students and faculty donate blood to support local hospitals and healthcare services
- Conducting surveys in nearby villages to identify pressing social issues, such as poverty, education and healthcare
- Developing targeted interventions to address the identified social concerns
- Cleanliness Drive in and around Nashik to promote Environmental awareness and Community involvement in maintaining a clean and healthy environment
- Adopted Anjaneri village for a period of three years
- Organising Tree Plantation Activity regularly
- Organizing various activities in this village, including Health camps and other initiatives to improve the overall well-being of the villagers
- Conducting awareness programs on critical issues like: AIDS, Gender Equity, Addiction, Violence
- Implementing a Standardization process to ensure the quality and impact of our initiatives
- Distributing essential materials and clothes to those in need
- Supporting social and cultural events in Nashik organized by other institutions
- Amhi Jijau Savitrichya Leki Outreach Programme by which providing orientation programs for school girls on Health and hygiene, Mobile addiction, Career counselling and Emotional Wellbeing
- More than 25 activities aimed at making a positive impact on the community
- Students and staff of the College worked as Covid-19 warriors
- Participation of students in various rallies, marathons organised by Govt. and Private agencies
- Participation of students as volunteer in various programmes organised by local administration, University and private organisations
- Interaction with villagers during NSS camps
Evidence of Success:
- Positively impacted various segments of society, including: Underprivileged communities, School girls and patients in need of blood
- Raised awareness among citizens about pressing issues such as: Drug addiction, AIDS, Excessive mobile usage, Water pollution, Risks associated with plastic use
- Emphasized the importance of maintaining good physical and mental health for all citizens
- During Covid-19, Students stitched and distributed masks free of charge in slum areas
- College provided free RTPCR tests for family members of students and staff
- Organized a special blood collection drive in response to a request from the Civil Hospital to address the scarcity of blood during the pandemic
- Efforts were widely appreciated by organizations and institutions such as: Civil Hospital, Arpan Blood Bank and Villagers of Rajegaon, Sarul, and Anjaneri
- Our NSS volunteers have received special prizes from the University for their unparalleled contribution
- College received Silver Medal for creating awareness against tobacco consumption by Sambandh Foundation, Delhi
- Our students have been invited as volunteers by the organisers of Marathi Literary Festival (December 2021), Walkathon Nashik (May 2022) and Savitribai Phule Pune University (June 2022)
- Conducted medical health check-up camp at Anjaneri village in collaboration with Kasturi Hospital (May 2023)
- Initiative to create solar lamps for students in the tribal area of Surgana received special recognition
- Events received extensive coverage through: Local newspapers, Media outlets and Social media platforms
- Along with students, our staff members contributed to society by means working as Covid warrior, creating awareness about Millet, working as expert in forensic treatment for animals. This worked as an inspiration for students as well.
Problems Encountered and Resources Required:
Challenges
- The COVID-19 pandemic disrupted the schedule and forced the college to adapt and innovate.
- Academic commitments of students limited their availability for extended periods, making it challenging to plan and execute long-term projects.
- Limited financial resources constrained the ability to scale up initiatives and reach a wider audience.
- Coordinating with external stakeholders, such as NGOs, government agencies, and community organizations, posed a significant challenge.
- Limited human resources with expertise in community outreach and project management hindered the initiative.
- Insufficient infrastructure support made it difficult to facilitate activities.
Strategies to Overcome Challenges
- Planned in advance to ensure smooth execution of activities.
- Leveraged the network of alumni and staff acquaintances to facilitate partnerships with external agencies.
- Maintained effective communication with parents to ensure their support and cooperation.
- Adjusted the academic schedule to accommodate off-campus activities, alleviating concerns about potential academic losses.
- Recognized and appreciated students’ efforts to boost their morale and motivation.
- College management provided additional funding as needed to overcome resource limitations.
Outcomes
- Successfully navigated the challenges and ensured the continued success of community engagement and service efforts.
