History of the Department: (1924 TO 2018):  

  • The first Department of English in North Maharashtra
  • 1924-Establishment of the Department with the Establishment of the Arts College, headed by the  founder principal T.A. Kulkarni
  • 1948- Science (English for science students) Stream started
  • 1952-PG course started
  • 1980-81-Certificate Course in English (Extension Activity) started
  • 1994-95 Functional English under Vocationalization (Extension Activity) started
  • 2006 M. Phil Research Centre (YCM Open University) started.
  • 2014- Ph.D.  Research Centre of Savitribai Phule Pune University

Highlights of the Department:

  • Use of Language Lab for enhancing linguistic competence of the Functional English as well as conventional B.A. students
  • Film Club– Screening of movies, documentaries and short films to sensitize students to appreciate different media. Students are encouraged to discuss the film screened and also to write reviews. The Department maintains a special depository of
  • Dramatics Club– Students of the college are offered a much required platform by organizing performances of famous English plays including Nagamandala, The King and the Queen, An Episode in the life of Author, Othello and Taming of the Shrew.
  • LIT-FEST– Every year Literature Festival is being celebrated in the month of January since 2013-14 to help the students to showcase their talents and management skills. The festival consists of musical performance, dramatic skits, dance fusions and mime.
  • Remedial Courses– Remedial, Add-on and Bridge the Gap Courses are conducted for helping the students to improve their communicative skills including the Science students.
  • Supplementary Syllabi– Special syllabus, consisting on topics from Media studies and Writing Skills is designed to supplement the University syllabi for Functional English. The students are exposed to various methods and practical situations of teaching-learning process.
  • Mentoring and Counseling– the respective mentor of every class has to ensure that all the students of the class engage in the above methods. S/he also counsels the weak and the bright students separately for better learning and adaption.
  • Unconventional Methods of Evaluation – Scrapbook, Field Visits, On the Job Training, Role Playing and Project Work including E-Projects, Open Book Test, MCQ Test, Practical Criticism, Preparing Bibliography
  • Publication of an experimental journal- ‘Green Minds
