DEPARTMENT OF BOTANY
INTRODUCTION
Botany is one of the fundamental branches of life Sciences which deals with the basic needs of human society, livelihood and environment.
History
Gokhale Education Society was established in 1918. H.P.T. College was established in 1924 when only arts stream was started. Science stream was started in 1948 and Botany was one of the subjects at first year was started in June 1948. Dr. S. M. Gadgil was appointed as Head, Department of Biology from June 1948 and was continued on the same post till June 1964.
Dr. P. B. Vaidya was appointed as Head, Department of Botany in June 1964 and continued as head of this department till December 1989. T. Y. B. Sc. started in his regime in 1971. We take pride in stating that our college was 1st in Nashik District who has started teaching of Botany at T. Y. B. Sc. level as a principal subject. Thus T. Y. B. Sc. level teaching continued for last 54 years. Department received permanent affiliation from Government of Maharashtra No. UPF 2074/5526-1/1, Sachivalaya, Mumbai Dated 19.02/75 and from University of Pune from June 1974, letter No. 74-75/1049 dated 18/06/74.
Department started Post Graduate course in Botany from 2007-2008 with Plant Biotechnology and Genetics from the year 2015 as a specialization. Department has recognized research Center in Botany by the Savitribai Phule University, Pune since 2011-2012. Department continues to excel in all its domains. All the Faculty members are Ph.D. holder with P.G. recognition and Ph.D. guide recognition by the University. Faculty members have completed Major and Minor research projects funded by different agencies. Faculty members have published around 125 research publications since 2019. Nine new plant species (10) were discovered by the faculty members. Since 2011, faculty members have been working on the conservation and cultivation of minor millets by involving tribal farmers and students. Our students remain University topper in 2007, 2011, 2012, 2014, 2017, 2018, 2020,2021 and 2022 and many times in the list of University rank holder. Our students have been actively participated in various University, regional and state level competition (Avishkar), National and International conferences and seminars. Department provide platform for the holistic development of students through Botany festival, Botanica, Botany quiz, excursions, hands on training etc.

Research contribution of Prof. (Dr.) S.G. Auti
- Millet research –
Since 2011, working on minor millets of North Maharashtra, and parts of a Palghar (Jawhar and Wada region) and Kolhapur districts. Field survey and research on minor millets (Finger millet and little millet) substantially validate the fact that they are highly nutritious, rain feed crop which does not need chemical fertilizers, fungicides or pesticides and grow well on marginal lands. In our field survey, we have noted that most of the tribal farmers used to cultivate traditional seeds as they are not aware with varieties released by Agricultural Universities. Landraces are more nutritious than the varieties specifically with reference to minerals and antioxidant activity. In the present scenario it is one of the best options to overcome problem of water scarcity and climate change. The majority people are not aware about diversity and potential of millets such as Nachani, Varai, Sava, Rala, Kodra, and Morbanti
During our research, we have gathered and documented 120 landraces from Maharashtra, evaluated for nutritional composition and antioxidant potential, and the best nutritious 10 landraces were preserved for seed multiplication and distribution with the support of farmers and students from remote localities.
- Formulation of Millet Products –
Product Formulation: One of PhD student, Dr. Tahsin Kazi has worked on millet-based food product formulations. Commercial production has been initiated under the brand name: Dr. Ragi (http://drragi.in/). Some of the products are ragi drink, ragi cake, ragi pancake, ragi soup premixes and, ragi daliya, rava, malt, flour, multigrain khichdi etc.
- Work on Floristic diversity
First paper on floral diversity of Anjaneri plateau (28 Km away from Nashik), Documented 385 plant species, out of which 125 are endemic.
Working on seed germination and restoration of endemic plant species from Northern Western Ghats lies in the Nashik district of Maharashtra (India).

SOCIAL CONTRIBUTION OF DEPARTMENT –
- Millet Mission:
One of the staff members have been working on conservation, cultivation and promotion of Finger millet and little millet since 2011. During our survey, we have noted that most of the tribal farmers used to cultivate traditional seeds as they are not aware with varieties released by Agricultural Universities. During our research, we have gathered and documented 120 landraces from Maharashtra, evaluated for nutritional composition and antioxidant potential, and the best nutritious 10 landraces were preserved for seed multiplication and distribution with the support of farmers and students from remote localities.
To create awareness delivered more than 30 lectures at various places and organized workshops for the students, farmers and tribal women during the period of international year of Millets -2023. Delivered talk on “Nashik Akaswani” for people awareness.
The goal of the work is to mobilize students and the general public in support of millet promotion, conservation, and cultivation of millet landraces for their valuable nutritional compounds, gene pool, and ultimately, the empowerment of millet-growing farmers. The majority of the farmers are from tribal areas. To accomplish this goal, the development of expertise or human resources is critical, and I am working to enhance and strengthen the capacity and necessary skills in the students and people from millet growing areas.
Our observations and research on Minor millets substantially validate the fact that they are highly nutritious, rain feed crop which does not need chemical fertilizers, fungicides or pesticides and grow well on marginal lands. In the present scenario it is one of the best options to overcome problem of water scarcity and climate change.
- Mission – “Save Anjaneri”
Anjaneri is high altitude basaltic plateau, 25 Km from Nashik. The Plateau harbor great diversity of floral diversity, exhibits more 400 flowering plant species out of which 125 are endemic. We have been creating awareness towards its ecological importance by involving students in this mission and delivering talk at various places, Nashik Akaswani and articles in newspapers.
Our students were involved in the protest against encroachment and development of road on Anjaneri plateau. Create a awareness among people. Made a documentary film on floral diversity of “Anjaneri- The hidden treasure”. The purpose of documentary film making is to create awareness among people towards importance of plateaus and its floral diversity Film screen at various places, specifically at Ankur International film festival and Kirloskar Vasundhara International film festival.
3.Create awareness among the students by providing detail information on campus plant species
